They do not know nor do they understand; They walk about in darkness; All the foundations of the Earth are shaken. Psalm 82:5

I have counted 149 lights in my house, not including a box of torches I’ve been collecting in my office. The truth is, I have become a bit light obsessed. Christmas will be here in a few weeks and the light count will go up dramatically. But having a box of torches in your cupboard is not what it means to not walk in the dark.

There is an ever-increasing torrent of change happening across the world. A restructuring in the Middle East as America wades into the ongoing Gaza conflict; a split in the Church of England; an earthquake through the BBC as we finally question what we are being fed. The rise of global Islam; an increase in lawlessness; wars and rumours of wars. It goes on.

In Genesis 19, Lot is rescued from Sodom in what was a day of judgment. Through the passage the sun sets and rises again - as God’s judgment due to the towns of Sodom and Gomorrah rains down. Clear instructions were given as Lot and his family fled the judgements of God: be careful in which direction you look. Don’t look back. For dear Lot’s wife it was the natural thing to do; everything she had loved, worked for and cared about was going up in smoke. Looking for understanding in the natural got her nowhere (a salty pillar of nowhere to be exact).
We may not have the judgment of Sodom yet we are beginning to come under God's judgment. We have rebelled again and again against the statutes of God, going after immorality, passing laws in our parliament that break down our Christian heritage. Not just turning our back on our creator God - but in wilful opposition to Him.

Our approach to making sense of world and national events matters. To look in the natural will get us nowhere; we need spiritual understanding.
But a natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14
At the end of Lot’s story, we find him drunk. The odd thing is, at the end of Genesis 9 Noah is too. Why do these two men, having both seen deliverance from God’s awful judgment, turn to the bottle? It’s not an object lesson in home brewing or even a judgment in your consumption but a loud call to be sober in these days. To be sober is to be alert; not just to observe events through a haze of confusion but to have understanding.
But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would not overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night or of darkness; so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. 1 Thessalonians 5:4-7
Sleeping is what we do in the darkness - it’s natural. Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians implies that to be sober is to stay awake in the dark. Not to be ignorant of what is coming upon us, but to stay alert and be sober. To look is to be nothing more than an observer. But to watch is to understand the battle we are in, to ask, ‘what am I looking at?’, to question what you see. It will come as no surprise that it is the Bible and the daily reading of it that we are firmly nudging you towards. In Psalm 119 verse 105, the Bible is a lamp and a light. Something to guide your feet so you don’t stumble and a light that reaches an understanding of what’s ahead. There is no need for us to walk in the dark. And if we were thinking that walking according to the Bible is only for the clever, then:
The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. Psalm 19:7
If you’re feeling like you’re being buffeted by the waves of all that is going on, now is the time to wake up and seek the wisdom of God in light of His Word. Because looking for understanding in the natural will never get us anywhere.
The Don't walk in the Dark project is a call to the church to wake up and strengthen the things that remain. The darkness has come upon us and without the word of God we are without a light and hopeless walk in the dark blindly leading the blind. Goliath is about to appear and we are an army without a sword facing the biggest battle of our lives. Since 2022 we taken the challenge ourselves and have begun to produce resources to challenge the church to pick up their Bibles read their Bibles and dare to live seperatly according to its truths. If we can help you to raise up the word of God please get in touch. Whether to talk about your project or the support you need. We have run a Bible outreach cafe for 20 years with the Word of God boldly at its centre and are not afraid to raise up the light in the public space. Or if you just like what we are doing please do take a moment to get in touch.
