Last years fish dinner?

Last years fish dinner?

In john 21 we meet Peter with time on his hands, ‘I am going fishing “ he announces  and he heads off with a few others on a night trip . But the professional fishermen ( for he was stripped for work  v7 ) caught nothing. You couldn’t blame their kit , you couldn’t blame their technique , and it wasn’t the fault of the location. Maybe this had never happened before .  Toiling in the darkness, all night long  trying everything as the Lord disciples  to bring in a catch …but nothing . But then as the light began to dawn on their situation Jesus commanded and they obeyed .

They cast, and they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish .  John 21 v 6

After breakfast the Lord asked Peter in v 15   Do you love me more than these ?   Than what ?

What are the options ?   The other disciples? The boats? The breakfast?

Or the great big pile of fish that the Lord has just provided !  We do toil as the Lord disciples in the darkness and are willing to be there all night. But nothing – fruitless!  And in our exhaustion and weakness the Lord commands – we obey and there’s an abundance . Peter was heading towards Pentecost where there would be a great multiplication – and many many sheep that would need tending . This was to be Peters job . But can not the multiplication become our love ? What the Lord is doing with us , or the jewels in the word He has shown us become the things we stack up and keep polished . The great big piles of fishy abundance the lord had just supplied  were not going to last long. They may fed many people, given Peter a testimony and encouraged him on his way. But what about the “ do you love me ?”

It seems to be the same problem in Revelation 2 v2 to the church in Ephesus.

I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men and you put to the test those who call them selves apostles, and they are not….you have perseverance….have endured for My name sake …not grown weary But I have this against you that you have left your first love.  Revelation 2 v2

They seemed to be running the business of church so well but they had fallen in love with the heaps of fish more than the lord.  What Jesus was doing, rather than being in fellowship with the who was doing it . This must be easy to do when you have endured a long dark fruitless night of  fishing .

The last eighteen months have been a time of real stripping away. With many beautiful chair filled, gloss finished churches now redundant with many refusing to come off zoom, or some just realising that a Netflix box set is a better way to spend a Sunday.  What if, a full up church or great facilities, or a busy church program- as much as they may have been the fruits of a night long struggle and even in obedience to the lords instruction now are just fish dinners and lovely happy memories?

But who do you love ? The  pandemic may have just whipped the curtain away from our hearts and shown it for what it is .

Because lawlessness is increased, most peoples love will go cold. But the one who endures to the end he will be saved.    Matt 24 v 12&13

But how do we love the lord? Does it not show in what we delight in. Chocolate, biking, tv, coffee small and strong  …?

But his delight is in the law of the lord and in his law he meditates day and night .   Psalm 1

In these last days ….. get in the word, get in the word, get in the word !
